Why Cat and Dog?
It is rumoured that
when Adam was created, God gave him a dog to be a reflection of his love for the man. The
creature’s name was a mirror image of GOD’s own – DOG. Dog was so accommodating and such an affable
companion that it was noted that Adam was strutting about like a peacock so loved did he feel.
So God created the cat. Cat would not obey Adam nor would he follow him lovingly about. As Adam gazed in to Cat’s eyes he was reminded that he was not the supreme being and so Adam learned humility. And God was pleased. Adam was greatly improved and Cat did not care one way or the other!
How does this relate to your professional life?
In work terms the workers on the 3rd floor of an office (Dogs) may not want to visit the 7th floor (Cats):
“It’s so quiet up there! No one talks to you and they’re all so GRUMPY!”
Similarly the 7th floor managers can’t cope with the people on the 3rd floor:
“They do nothing but chat all day long down there. They’re all so busy being nice to each other, I can’t imagine how they get any work DONE!”
Knowing your behavioural type can help you to identify where you can do things differently and change the way people respond to you. For example:
"A woman I worked with was having a problem with making initial business contacts. She felt something about the way she was communicating was putting people off, although when they'd worked with her for a while they’d realise that she gets the job done.
Drawing on the behavioural work that I do, I thought she may be a Cat, as opposed to a Dog, and was able to suggest to her that we could look at her cat-like behaviours and non-verbal communication, and explore how they were affecting her relationships (especially with Dogs!)
We started by doing an exercise on initial conversations, and moved on to a presentation on perceptions.
By bringing out her ‘inner Dog’, we she was able to develop more behaviours that typical Dogs can
relate to, and create a more positive response.
She is now more aware of the behaviours she uses when first meeting people (Cat-like), and
how to come across as more accommodating (Dog-like), with excellent results in both her personal
and professional life.”
