These rules may seem to help you manage your life, but in reality may be what’s stopping you from accepting yourself as you are, and of getting what you really want. They can ultimately lead to self-critical thinking that negatively impacts your self-esteem and confidence.
The rules that more often than not, stand in the way of you doing the things that you’d really love to do, and being all that you long to be can:
- Stop you from taking action, or make you delay taking action
- Create self-sabotaging, restrictive behaviours

- Negatively define your identity

Limiting rules can affect the way other people respond to us.
For example:
“A woman I worked with was struggling with how others perceived her. After working together for while, we realised that her underlying problem was a lack of self-esteem. At some point she had decided “I am an island, I don't need anybody”. Her attitudes and behaviours reflected this, and she was pushing people away.
By identifying what her limiting rule was she was able to break through it, replace it with a new rule which serves her, and build a new, more positive attitude.

Your beliefs may be based on cultural expectations, the messages you took in from family, friends and teachers, or decisions you’ve made about life based on past experiences. These rules and beliefs now form the fundamental rules that you live your life by.
