What is Stress?
The Oxford English Dictionary describes stress as ‘demand on a physical or mental energy’.
‘Stress disease’ is described as ‘disease resulting from continuous mental stress.’
Stress is a natural physiological reaction that happens when your brain responds to a perceived threat. The brain can’t tell the difference between positive and negative events, and is constantly ready for action whether the threat is real or imagined.
This constant readiness creates mental and physical symptoms of stress that are not always easy to dissipate. For some people these symptoms can become significant, especially when sustained over a long period of time with little or no opportunity for respite.
Are you over-performing?
A common response to stress in the workplace is 'over-performing' - the desire to get things done to the same if not higher standards than before - which in turn can lead to burnout.
When over-performing becomes the norm you are unlikely to be able to tell if your workload is excessive or not.
