About Coaching
Make an informed decision!
What is coaching?
Coaching is a unique kind of conversation between two equals, designed to unblock your potential, raise your self-awareness and responsibility (ability to respond), and help you make the changes you want in your life - on your own terms.
Coaching provides a confidential, safe space, and protected time, where you will experience quality attention and be encouraged to think things through at your own pace, to find and implement your own solutions.
Your coach will ask you a specific series of open coaching questions tailored to you and your situation – sometimes challenging, always supportive, they are designed to challenge the obstacles and break through patterns of thinking that have been holding you back, and help you find your way forward.
Some definitions:
“Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance”
- Timothy Gallwey, The Inner Game of Tennis
"Coaching is an ongoing partnership that helps clients produce fulfilling results in their personal
and professional lives. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve
their performance and enhance their quality of life."
- The International Coach Federation
“Coaching is the art of facilitating the performance, learning and development of another.”
- Myles Downey, Effective Coaching
'Coaching removes the interference that stands between clients and the achievement of their
potential.'
- Curly Martin
“We must see people in terms of their future potential not their past performance.”
- Sir John Whitmore, Coaching for Performance

Coaching is:
- Non-judgmental
- Non-critical
- Non-directive
- Confidential
- Action oriented
- Future oriented
It’s about taking stock of your life now, and making the changes you need to create your best future!
Coaching is not:
- Counselling or Therapy
- Training or Mentoring
- Advice
Doing something because we’ve been told to do it or because it was suggested to us is often a one-off exercise; coaching aims to help people develop transferable skills and repeatable strategies.
“I believe every person has all the answers they need inside of them. Sometimes you just need some help to unblock them, and some support to listen to them - which means I won’t tell you what to do! As your coach I will act as your sounding board, your facilitator, a guide lighting the way on your journey of personal growth.” – Fi Ivin
What happens in a coaching session?
- You are in control - the agenda is driven by your situation and needs
- You set your own goals, and decide on a plan of action
- Your coach asks you open questions, gives you feedback, and keeps you on track
- Your coach holds you accountable for your actions
