Dress for the level you want – not the level you’re at!
Hilary and Neil (MBA students at Cranfield) won a competition run by the Careers Department for a free Colour and Style Analysis.
Hilary said that all she could see when she looked at photos of herself was her shiny forehead.
She had given up on her hair, and insisted that nothing could be done with it!
It didn’t take much to turn what she thought was one of her worst assets – into one of her best!
For these students, like many other up-and-coming professionals, the challenge is the same – they’ve focused on their intellectual development, but spent very little time developing a powerful professional image.
Do YOU stand out from the crowd?
Often at the start of a workshop I ask people to answer the following questions, and tell them to sit down if:
- They don’t want to be successful
- They don’t believe that they are uniquely different with gifts and skills of their own to offer
Naturally, everyone remains standing!
My next question is: "If we’re all unique, why do we dress the same – especially at work?"
For most people, a suit is the answer, it is after all the workplace uniform. Next time you’re at a business meeting have a look around – you’ll invariably be surrounded by a sea of black suits!
